The DayZ community lives on mods – from traders and bases to full overhauls like Expansion. Managing mods by hand, though, is painful. Here’s how it works and how to make it easier.

## How mods work on a DayZ server

Every Steam Workshop mod consists of a mod folder (e.g. `@CF`) and a **key** (`.bikey`) that must be in the server’s `keys` folder. The server then loads mods via a launch parameter:

```
-mod=@CF;@DabsFramework;@DayZ-Expansion-Core
```

Watch the **load order** – dependencies (like CF or Dabs Framework) must load first.

## Manual vs. automatic

Manually, you have to download the mod, upload it to the server, copy the key, edit the parameters and repeat it all after every mod update. If the mod version on the server differs from the player’s, they can’t join.

In our control panel you just **paste the mod ID** from the Workshop (or search for it). The panel:

- downloads the mod and updates it on every start,
- copies the `.bikey` keys,
- sets the `-mod` parameter in the right order,
- warns you about missing dependencies.

## Economy and loot: types.xml

Loot on a DayZ server is controlled by `types.xml` in the mission folder (e.g. `mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/db/`). Each item has, among other things:

- `nominal` – how many should be on the map,
- `min` – the amount below which it starts respawning,
- `lifetime` – how long an item stays on the ground,
- `restock` – how quickly it’s replenished.

Editing it in a text editor is tedious, and one XML mistake breaks the economy. That’s why we offer a **clear editor** right in the control panel that validates the file.

## Maps

- **Chernarus** – the classic, free with the game.
- **Livonia** – requires the DLC for players.
- **Sakhal** – the winter map from the Frostline DLC.
- **Community maps** – Deer Isle, Namalsk and more, installed as mods.

## Server visibility

To help players find you, set the server name in `serverDZ.cfg` and make sure the server is public. Players often find modded servers through **DZSA Launcher**, which downloads mods automatically.

## Performance

A modded DayZ server with Expansion and a trader needs **12 GB of RAM or more**. And since the central economy and AI load mostly one core, CPU performance is what counts. Check out [DayZ hosting](/en/dayz-hosting/) on Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPUs.
